A retail chain in Poland swapped 40 printed lightboxes for a digital advertising screen in every store. Six months on, 11 looked pale and washed out. Nothing had burned out. The supplier shipped 450-nit indoor LCD panels into stores with floor-to-ceiling glass facing south, and by July those panels could not out-brighten the daylight coming through.
Why A Digital Advertising Screen Is Not A Commercial Television
The question buyers ask us most is whether they can just buy a big TV and mount it. They can. It will look excellent for about a year.
A television runs four hours a night in a living room. A digital advertising screen runs eighteen hours a day, seven days a week, for five years. The gap shows up in three places a spec sheet never mentions: how hard the power supply is derated, how heat leaves the enclosure, and how the panel handles a static image parked in one spot for months.
A distributor in the Netherlands learned this the expensive way. He ordered 120 consumer 55-inch displays for a supermarket chain, saved roughly 40 percent a unit, and installed them in February. By August, 30 had permanent ghosting from the price grid that never moved. Warranty did not cover it, and replacing those 30 units ate his entire margin.
So when you compare quotes for a digital advertising screen, compare the duty rating before the price. If the datasheet never states continuous running hours, that silence is the answer.
LCD Or LED On A Digital Advertising Screen, And Where The Fork Happens
Two families dominate this category and they are not competing for the same job.
LCD, including stretched and high-brightness variants, wins when the nearest viewer stands within arm's reach. Menu boards, elevator panels, checkout queues, window displays behind glass. Fine text, cheap from 43 to 65 inch, easy to swap one unit at a time.
LED wins once viewing distance passes roughly three metres, or the surface is irregular, or the screen has to survive weather. At that distance pixel pitch stops mattering to the eye, while brightness and seamless tiling start to matter a lot.
The fork comes down to two numbers. How far away does the closest viewer stand, and how many hours a day does it run? A 2.5 mm LED wall viewed from two metres looks worse than a decent 4K LCD. The same wall at eight metres looks better than anything an LCD can do at any price.
What A Digital Advertising Screen Faces Outdoors That Indoors Never Does
Outdoor flips the maths, and this is where most first orders go wrong.
Indoors you fight ambient light. Outdoors you fight sun, rain, dust, salt, vandalism and thermal swing. And sun is not a brightness problem, it is a contrast problem. A screen rated 5,000 nits with a glossy face still loses to a 3,500-nit screen with a matte, low-reflection surface in afternoon sun.
A signage contractor in Queensland installed 24 outdoor units rated IP65 along a beachfront promenade. Within 14 months nine had water ingress. The IP rating was genuine. What failed was the gasket, which had never been rated for the daily cycle between 40°C afternoons and 18°C nights, and salt air found the gap that cycling opened.
Then there is the question nobody asks during quoting: who services it? An outdoor digital advertising screen mounted five metres up needs a maintenance path designed before the steel goes in. We have watched clients replace a working screen in year two because swapping one module needed a crane booking.
Brightness, Duty Cycle, And The Specs That Actually Bind
Brightness is quoted in nits, and the range you need is set by where the screen hangs. Indoors, 450 to 700 nits handles normal retail lighting. Behind glass facing daylight, start at 1,000 nits and insist on a matte coat. Direct sun outdoors begins around 3,500 nits.
Refresh rate only matters on camera. If the screen will be filmed, for live streams, broadcast backdrops or content shoots, ask for 3,840 Hz and up. On a poster wall nobody films, 1,920 Hz is plenty and the money is better spent on brightness.
Duty cycle is the number suppliers hide. On a digital advertising screen that runs all day, ask for continuous hours at a stated ambient temperature. If the answer comes back as a warranty period rather than a rating, you are being sold a television with a commercial sticker.
Service access decides whether a fault costs twenty minutes or a crane. On any wall above three metres, that choice outweighs a five percent price difference.
Quick answers on digital advertising screen
How much does a digital advertising screen cost? An indoor 55-inch LCD unit runs roughly 300 to 900 US dollars depending on brightness and duty rating. Outdoor high-brightness units start near 1,500 dollars, and LED walls are priced per square metre, so a 20 square metre outdoor face can pass 30,000 dollars before steel and installation.
Can one digital advertising screen serve both indoors and outdoors? Technically yes, practically no. An outdoor-rated panel used indoors wastes money and runs hot. An indoor panel used outdoors fails within a season, usually through moisture rather than heat.
What brightness do I need for a shop window? Work out what the glass cuts and what the street adds. Facing the sun, 1,000 to 2,500 nits with a matte finish. Facing a shaded arcade, 700 nits is often enough.
LCD or LED for a 60 square metre facade? LED, without much debate. LCD cannot be tiled seamlessly at that scale, and the seams will be the first thing every passer-by notices.
How long should a digital advertising screen last? Indoor commercial units should hold 50,000 hours to half brightness. If a supplier will not put continuous hours and half-brightness life in writing, treat the figure as marketing.
Ordering Without The Guesswork
The order of decisions matters more than any single spec. Fix where the screen hangs and who stands in front of it. The technology then picks itself, brightness and duty rating follow, and price comes last.
For indoor retail, our indoor digital advertising screens cover the 43 to 65 inch range in LCD and fine-pitch LED. Where the screen goes outside or onto a facade, our outdoor digital advertising screens start at 3,500 nits inside IP65 enclosures. Everything else sits under the digital signage catalogue.
Send your store dimensions and mounting plan through our inquiry page and we will tell you which side of the fork you are on, even when the honest answer is the cheaper one.
